Mathematics
Our aim is to support our students to develop a long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of mathematics. This is achieved through developing their fluency, mathematical reasoning and the ability to solve problems in unison.
• All students are expected to actively engage and participate in their learning.
• Students should be mathematically fluent and are able to communicate effectively both orally and on paper.
• Students are provided with regular opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding independently.
• Classrooms are positive and safe learning environments, where it is encouraged to take risks and build resilience.
"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics."
Paul Halmos
What makes us special?
Mathematics is delivered by means of an ambitious programme in which every student is expected to succeed. Central to this delivery is Sparx Maths, an online platform which brings mathematics teaching into the twenty-first century. Clear exposition from experienced teachers and plenty of guided practice complement cutting-edge technology, giving every student the opportunity to develop their mathematical abilities at the optimal rate.
Assessment
There are assessments at the end of each cycle of learning (i.e. every twelve weeks). Students in years 10 and 11 sit mock GCSE exams. At the end of Year 11, students sit three GCSE papers. Each paper is one and a half hours long. The first paper is non-calculator. A calculator is required for papers two and three.
Progression & careers
Mathematics leads in many directions and opens many doors. For those wishing to pursue the subject beyond Year 11, Maths and Further Maths A-levels are both highly sought-after qualifications. But, as the world becomes ever more mathematical, so mathematics plays an increasing role in a great many careers and in the professional qualifications which lead to those careers.
